Sustainability at Nether Glenny Farm
A place to feel good about visiting
Staying gently, with care and purpose
Nether Glenny Farm offers an opportunity to stay somewhere that cares for the land, supports local producers and gently encourages more conscious choices. Sustainability here is not a marketing concept, but a way of living and working that has evolved naturally over time.
As Sir David Attenborough has said, “Anything that can’t be done forever is, by definition, unsustainable.”
This idea underpins the decisions we make across the farm.
Caring for historic buildings
Nether Glenny Farm has been part of this landscape for hundreds of years. In the 1970s, the original barns were first repurposed into what are now Kestrel and Buzzard cottages. Since then, we have continued to care for and sympathetically refurbish these buildings, retaining original features such as exposed stone walls and recessed doorways while improving comfort, warmth and efficiency.
In 2014, a disused storeroom was carefully converted into Merlin, a compact, low-impact studio designed for guests exploring the surrounding hills.
Each space balances heritage with modern comfort, allowing the buildings to continue their working life without losing their character.
Thoughtful comfort and low-impact choices
The wood-fired hot tubs at Buzzard and The Bothy are intentionally simple. There are no chemicals, no noise and no artificial lighting — just hot water, fresh air, dark skies and time to slow down.
Our bedding is made from white organic cotton, chosen for both comfort and environmental responsibility. Cleaning products throughout the cottages are free from harsh chemicals, protecting our septic system, your health and our small team.
Biodegradable kitchen sponges are provided and can be taken home to complete their life cycle. Gentle cleaning products are also available in each cottage for guest use.
Dine In at Nether Glenny
Our Dine In menu is designed to complement a slower, more thoughtful stay. Tracy leads our kitchen, creating seasonal dishes that celebrate local flavours and simple, well-made food.
Wherever possible, ingredients are locally sourced and organic, with much of the fruit used in our cooking coming directly from the farm.
Our orchard and homemade produce
In the 1990s, Jim and Eleanor Forbes, the farm’s previous owners, planted apple trees, damson trees, a plum tree, and blackcurrant and redcurrant bushes. These continue to produce generous harvests year after year.
We use as much of this fruit as possible in our Dine In menu, jams and chutneys, with surplus frozen for use throughout the year. Guests are welcome to pause in the orchard, enjoy the blossom in spring, and pick fruit for their cottage in late summer and autumn.
Coos & Views and life on the farm
Our Coos & Views experience offers visitors the chance to step into the daily life of a working farm shaped by sustainable practices, rewilded landscapes and centuries of history. Guests meet our Highland cattle, explore the land and enjoy homemade food, all while learning how farming and nature work together here.
Immerse yourself in the journey
From the moment you arrive, we invite you to experience sustainability in a way that feels natural rather than instructed. Wander the walks, take in the views, enjoy the peace and spend time outdoors.
Nether Glenny Farm is a place to slow down, reconnect and feel good about the choices you make while you’re here.
Energy, water and resources
Heating and hot water across the farm are supplied by biomass fuel. In 2011, we installed our biomass boiler, marking the first major step in our sustainability journey. Each year, we source around fifty tonnes of wood from sustainably managed woodland. Matt prepares and stores the wood on site, ensuring moisture levels are kept below twenty percent for efficient use.
This system saves approximately nineteen tonnes of carbon each year.
Water at Nether Glenny has always been off-grid. Our supply comes directly from a natural spring in the Menteith Hills and is carefully filtered before serving the cottages and farmhouse. It fully meets council standards and is wonderfully fresh. To help reduce plastic waste, we gently encourage guests to enjoy our spring water rather than bringing bottled water.
Supporting Local
We are fortunate to be surrounded by excellent local producers, farm shops and independent businesses. Before your arrival, we’ll share recommendations so you can join us in supporting the local economy during your stay.
Looking Ahead
Our sustainability journey continues to grow. In the coming years, we plan to produce more of our own vegetables and offer small-scale beef and lamb boxes directly from the farm. Our aim is to bring the land to your plate, combining flavour, traceability and care for the environment.
